Can an electric rooflight be opened manually?

The short answer

Yes, most electric rooflights can be opened by hand when the power is off, but only if that fallback was built into the unit at the point of installation. A mains-only motor with no manual override and no battery behind it will stay exactly where it was when the electricity cut out, so the honest answer depends entirely on which system sits inside the frame and how it was specified.

The three ways a powered rooflight moves without mains power

A powered rooflight is a motor pushing a metal arm, called an actuator, against the weight of the glass. Take the mains supply away and the motor stops. Whether you can still open the glass comes down to one of three arrangements, and it is worth knowing which one you are dealing with before you need it.

The first is a battery backup. A small rechargeable pack keeps the actuator working for a set number of cycles after the supply drops, usually enough to close a rooflight that was open in the rain and to run it a handful of times. This is the arrangement most people actually want, because the glass keeps moving under its own power and nobody has to reach the roof.

The second is a genuine manual override: a physical way to drive or release the actuator by hand. Depending on the make, that means a winding handle, a socket that takes an Allen key, a pull cord that disengages the motor so the glass swings on its hinge, or a removable crank. It is slower than pressing a button and it needs you to reach the unit, but it works with no electricity at all.

The third is nothing. A single-speed mains actuator wired straight to a switch, with no battery and no hand fitting, cannot be opened when the power is off. The glass is held shut by the drive itself, and forcing it by hand risks stripping the gears. Plenty of the cheaper opening rooflights fall into this group, which is why the question is worth asking before the unit is chosen rather than after.

What manual override looks like on the common systems

The detail varies by manufacturer, and the language on a spec sheet is not always plain. A few patterns cover most of what goes into a house roof:

  • Chain actuators. Common on smaller opening roof windows. Some carry a manual release that lets the chain run free so you can push the sash open; others are sealed and offer nothing. The presence of a release is a per-model detail, so it needs checking against the specific unit, not the brand.
  • Spindle or rack actuators. Used on heavier glass and on roof lanterns. These often take a winding handle or a hex key on the actuator body. You turn it to drive the glass open by hand at the point of installation, which is the same fitting the installer uses to set the travel.
  • Linear actuators with a clutch. The better systems include a clutch that disengages the motor from the arm, so the glass can be moved freely and then re-engaged. This is the arrangement that pairs naturally with a battery backup.

One point that trips people up: a rain sensor is not a manual system. Most powered rooflights close automatically when a sensor on the frame detects rain, and that feature usually rides on the battery backup so it still works in a power cut. It protects the room, but it gives you no way to open the glass by hand. The two things are separate, and a unit can have the sensor without having any manual fallback at all.

Why this matters more on a south-facing roof

An opening rooflight is not only about fresh air. On a warm roof it is a heat vent, letting the hottest air out at the highest point of the room, and that job is at its most useful on exactly the day the electricity is most likely to be strained. In a room like that, an opening rooflight is doing real work against solar gain and glare, and losing the ability to open it on a hot afternoon is more than an inconvenience.

If the roof faces south, the glass wants a low G-value to cut the heat coming through in the first place, and the vent wants a reliable way to open regardless of the mains supply. Get one without the other and you have solved half the problem. How to check what your rooflight has

If a unit is already in the roof and you are not sure which of the three arrangements you have, there are a few ways to find out without guessing:

  • Find the model number. It is usually on a sticker on the frame or the actuator. The manufacturer’s data sheet for that exact model will state whether a manual override or battery backup is available, and often whether it was fitted as standard or as an option.
  • Look at the actuator body. A visible socket, a hex fitting or a small cranking point is a strong sign of a hand override. A sealed unit with only a cable leaving it is a sign there is none.
  • Test it deliberately, not in a crisis. Isolate the supply at the switch and try the documented manual method once, so you know it works and you know where the handle or key lives. Do not force the glass by hand on a unit with no documented override.
  • Ask about the control box. Battery backups usually sit in a separate control unit near the rooflight or in the loft. If there is one, it will be listed on the paperwork.

When the answer comes back as “nothing”, the room is not stuck with that forever. Swapping the actuator for a system with a clutch and a battery, or replacing the whole unit if the frame will not take a different drive, is a straightforward change of specification. It is the same decision you would make new, just applied to an opening that already exists.

What to do next
