How do you cool a room with a large skylight?

The single most effective move is to stop the sun before it reaches the glass, so shade a large skylight from the outside and you will cut more heat than any coating or blind can manage on its own. After that, three things share the rest of the load: solar-control glass with a low G-value, a way for hot air to leave the room at its highest point, and internal blinds to take the edge off glare. Do them in that order of impact and a bright room stops turning into an oven.
Shade the glass from the outside first
Heat behaves differently depending on where you intercept it. Once sunlight has passed through the glazing and struck the floor, the furniture and the walls, it re-radiates as long-wave heat that the glass will not let back out. That is the greenhouse effect, and it is why a blind hung under a skylight warms up and then heats the room from below. Catch the same sunlight above the glass and none of that energy ever enters the room in the first place.
External options for a large opening include an awning or a fixed brise-soleil over a lantern, a pergola or planting that throws shade across a flat-roof extension in high summer, and purpose-made external roller shades that clip over a roof window and run on side rails. Even a light-coloured or reflective external finish helps, because a dark roof surround absorbs heat and pushes it towards the aperture. The catch is access and cost: shading a rooflight three or four metres up is harder to reach and clean than a blind you can touch from a chair. Weigh that against the fact that outside shading routinely blocks a large majority of the incoming solar energy, where an internal blind blocks a fraction of it.
Specify low G-value solar-control glass
If you cannot shade from outside, or you want the room to stay comfortable without deploying anything, the glass itself has to do the work. The number that governs this is the G-value: the share of the sun’s energy that gets through the pane and becomes heat inside. Clear double glazing sits around 0.6, which lets roughly sixty per cent of that energy through. Solar-control double glazing brings it down to around 0.3, so a little under a third gets in. On a large skylight that difference is the gap between a usable room and one you avoid on a hot afternoon.
Orientation decides how far to push it. A skylight facing north sees only diffuse light and rarely overheats, so a strong solar-control coating there just costs you daylight and useful winter warmth. Facing south is the opposite problem, and around Southend that problem is sharper than most places. The city faces south across the Thames Estuary with an open horizon and light bouncing off the water, so a south-facing rear extension collects sun from mid-morning until the sun swings west with nothing to block it. A flat roof is worst of all, because horizontal glazing meets the high summer sun almost square on and orientation barely helps. Solar gain, G-value and glare are the whole reason this specification matters here, and choosing the glass around the compass is the core of our energy-efficient skylight installation work. If a large existing rooflight over a hot room is due to come out, the replacement is your one clean chance to change the glass, because the opening is already there and the only variable left is what goes into it.
Move the hot air, do not just block the light
Blocking sunlight deals with the heat arriving. Ventilation deals with the heat already in the room, and a large skylight is well placed to do it. Hot air rises and collects at the ceiling, which is exactly where the glazing sits, so an opening unit at the top of the room lets that layer escape while cooler air draws in through a door or window lower down. This is the stack effect, and on a tall or deep space it shifts a surprising amount of heat with no power at all.
A few points make it work in practice. One opening unit high up plus one low inlet gives you a through-draught; a single opening on its own does far less. On a big lantern it is often better to combine a fixed low G-value pane with one opening unit than to open every section, because you keep the solar control across most of the glass and still get the venting. Electric openers with a rain sensor are worth it on a rooflight you cannot reach, since the point of ventilation is lost if the unit stays shut because opening it is a nuisance. Use internal blinds for glare, not as your main defence
Internal blinds still have a job, but it is a narrower one than most people expect. Their strength is glare: a large skylight can throw harsh light onto a screen or a worktop, and a blind you can pull across takes that away in seconds. What they do less well is stop heat, because by the time the sunlight hits the blind it is already inside the glass and warming the room. A reflective-backed blind mounted tight to the frame does better than a dark fabric hung loosely below it, since the aim is to bounce light back out through the pane before it is absorbed.
Treat blinds as the layer that handles comfort and privacy on top of a roof that is already specified to keep the heat out. If you find yourself relying on them to make the room bearable at all, that is a sign the glass or the outside shading is doing too little and the fix belongs higher up the list.
What to do next
Big glazing punishes a lazy approach, so scale the response to the opening. A single small roof window in a north bedroom needs almost nothing beyond clear glass. A four-metre lantern over a south-facing kitchen island is a solar collector over the one room that already makes its own heat from cooking, and it wants the full stack: outside shade where you can fit it, solar-control glass, an opening unit to vent, and blinds for glare. As a working guide, if the glazed roof area is more than roughly a sixth of the floor below, treat every measure here as necessary rather than optional. Mechanical cooling is the last resort: a fan helps you feel cooler but does not remove heat, and air conditioning is far dearer to run than keeping the sun out in the first place.
Start by working out which way the roof faces and whether it is pitched or flat, then measure the glazed area against the floor area of the room. That tells you how hard the skylight is working against you before anyone quotes you a thing. If the room already runs hot in summer, plan for external shading or low G-value glass rather than hoping a blind will cope.
